Persian New Year

I'm quite busy preparing for my 49th birthday (Tuesday) and for my favorite holiday, "No Ruz," which is the Iranian New Year.

This week, Iranians all over the world are cleaning house, getting rid of all clutter, buying a new outfit, and preparing to invite friends on March 21.

We are throwing a joint birthday/No Ruz celebration this weekend.

Tuesday, March 18 is "Chahar Shanbe Souri," or the last Tuesday of the Persian year. On that night Iranians and friends of Iran will take part in the traditional fire jumping ceremony.

March 21st, the first day of spring, is the first day of the year, according to the Iranian calendar. My friend Rachel has offered to prepare the Haft Sihn Sofret, or the Table of Seven S's for our party.

So, clean your house, buy a new suit of clothes, then sprout your wheat seeds today. Consult your fire department if you plan to jump fires. If you know any Iranians, be sure to wish them "No Ruz Mobarak!" (Happy New Year!).

*big hugs!* Happy birthday & New Year (& many more, of course!) Thanks for the info about it. The Celts engaged in fire jumping, as well (although more typically around the beginning of August.) Them crazy Indo-Europeans! ;)

I had no idea about the fire jumping. It's so interesting to hear about Persian tradition.

Thank you so much. I love learning a little about traditions of other cultures. And, as always, your drawings were charming!

OK, now I'm confused. I was told Iranians were part of the Axis of Evil. How can they also be happy, hopeful people with joyful celebrations and dreams of happy new years? Could it be...I'm just wondering out loud here...that we aren't getting the whole story? Could it be that the Iranian people aren't getting the whole truth about us?

Hah Mojoman!
Good point. That made me laugh.

I agree. I assume the fire jumping symbolises the transition from the old year to the new year.

Happy Birthday,Carolyn.
